The Other Side of the World Wide Web: Staying Vigilant Against Misinformations

In this digital era, the World Wide Web (www) plays a crucial role in making information resources more accessible to the people across the globe. It offers a convenient way for us to access and share knowledges and information with just a click. While it may offer us these benefits, we must also be aware of their dangers. The World Wide Web is a platform where everyone can post data and information, which means false or fake information is also present. Upon doing my research activity, I made sure that the information I gather are accurate by checking the credibility of the sources, the purpose of the website, and doing a cross-reference.

Firstly, checking the credibility of the source is crucial as it will tell us whether these contents are reliable or not. I reviewed the authors of the websites if they are a professional or an expert because it means that they have knowledge about the field that they wrote about. Additionally, there are websites that are prone to misuse, that is why I made sure that the website has a URL ending with .edu, .gov, .org, and .com which are often reliable. Thus, reducing the risk of seeing false information.

Secondly, I reviewed the purpose or the mission of the websites which is located at the "About us" page of the websites. It is important to assess their purpose because this will help us in determining biases. These biases will influence the presentation of information which leads to misinformation. We must always check the data's objectivity to ensure accuracy and reliability.

Lastly, cross-referencing. I visited multiple web sources about a certain topic I want to study and compare all of them if their main points are similar to each other. If it is, it means that the information is accurate. Also, Cross-referencing helped me to gather additional details to a certain topic which leads to a thorough understanding of a certain point or subject.

In conclusion, World Wide Web is a vast platform that is accessible to everyone. We should always keep in mind that false information is prevalent. It is essential to be vigilant and have the necessary skills and knowledge to analyze reliable sources and detect misinformation when using the Web.
